Website Analytics Notice
What the website’s own statistics system records, why, where and for how long.
This is the website’s standard notice, a supplement to the University of Eldoret’s institutional Privacy Policy and Cookies Policy, which apply to this website. The University reviews the final text.
Status on this website
- Website statistics are switched on.
- Detailed records are kept for at most 30 days. Daily totals, which contain no information about individual visitors, are kept for 5 years for the University’s long-term reporting. Earlier database backups keep data until they expire under the University’s backup schedule.
- The short notice shown when you open the website is for information; it does not ask for or record any consent.
What is recorded
When website statistics are switched on, the website records: which public page was opened (its address without any search terms or other parameters); the kind of site you came from (for example a search engine) and its domain name only; whether the screen is phone-, tablet- or computer-sized; the approximate country of your network connection; how far down the page you scrolled, in steps of 25%; approximately how long the page was actively in use; and clicks on programme platform links, programme actions, opportunities, pathway choices and file downloads.
How visits and countries are estimated
To estimate the number of visits, the website keeps a random code in your browser tab's session storage while you browse. It exists only in that tab, is replaced after 30 minutes without activity and disappears when you close the tab, so it cannot recognise you on a later visit. Your approximate country is looked up from your network address on the University's own server at the moment the page view is recorded; the address itself is not stored.
What is never recorded
No names, email addresses, phone numbers, passwords, form contents, student or farmer identifiers, IP addresses, full browser details, precise location, advertising identifiers, keystrokes, mouse movements, screen recordings or anything typed into the website. There are no cookies, no long-lived visitor IDs and no fingerprinting.
Automated traffic
To tell people apart from automated programs (such as search-engine crawlers), the website also counts automated requests from its own web server log, as daily totals by type. No address or browser detail from the log is kept in the statistics.
Why
To understand, in aggregate, which pages and programmes are useful, how easy the website is to use, and which programme platforms visitors look for, so the University can improve the website.
Where it is kept
Only on University-controlled servers, in the website’s own database. No Google Analytics, external analytics company, advertising network or other third party receives these statistics, and no third-party tracking code is loaded.
The limits of these statistics
The numbers describe estimated visits and page views, not people: the website cannot count unique visitors. Time and scrolling are signs of attention; they do not show that something was read. Countries are approximate. A click on “Visit Platform” is not an application or registration.
Your choices
You can opt out on the Privacy Preferences page. Browsers that send a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal are not counted.
