TAGDev 2.0, University of Eldoret through TVET CDACC Empower Educators Through Competency-Based Education and Recognition of Prior Learning Training

The University of Eldoret, through the School of Education and the TAGDev 2.0 Programme, in collaboration with the TVET Curriculum Development, Assessment and Certification Council (TVET CDACC), successfully conducted a week-long Training in Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) from 8th to 12th June 2026 at Sirikwa Hotel, Eldoret.

The intensive training brought together academic staff, curriculum developers, trainers, and education practitioners with the aim of strengthening institutional capacity in the implementation of Competency Based Education and Training and advancing the Recognition of Prior Learning framework in Kenya.

The workshop was officially opened by the University of Eldoret Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Thomas Cheruiyot, alongside the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs), Prof. Godfrey Netondo, the Acting Registrar (Academic Affairs), Dr. Hosea Kiplagat, and TAGDev 2.0 Coordinator, Prof. Julius Ochuodho. The opening ceremony underscored the University's commitment to transformative education, skills development, and alignment of academic programmes with industry and national development needs.

Throughout the five-day training, the lecturers were engaged in practical and interactive sessions facilitated by experts from TVET CDACC and the University of Eldoret. The sessions focused on key areas including Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET), implementation of modularized curricula, curriculum support materials, competency-based assessment, development and validation of assessment tools, industrial attachment mentorship, portfolio of evidence management, and quality assurance processes.

Participants also explored the role of TVET CDACC within Kenya's education ecosystem, the Kenya National Qualifications Framework (KNQF) progression pathways, and best practices in assessment design and verification. Through assignments, group work, presentations, and peer learning activities, attendees gained hands-on experience in developing learning plans, session plans, and competency-based assessment tools relevant to their respective disciplines.

A significant component of the training focused on Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), an approach that acknowledges and certifies skills, knowledge, and competencies acquired through formal, informal, and non-formal learning experiences. Participants received training on awareness creation, counselling and facilitation, RPL assessment planning, quality assurance, monitoring and evaluation, post-assessment support services, and the use of the TVET CDACC RPL Management Information System.

The workshop emphasized practical application through role plays, simulations, presentations, and the preparation of e-portfolios, enabling participants to develop competencies necessary for effective implementation of RPL initiatives within their institutions and communities.

As part of the programme's second phase, participants were assigned collaborative case studies, development of individual e-portfolios, and simulation videos covering publicity and awareness creation, counselling and facilitation, and summative assessment processes. These activities are expected to reinforce the skills acquired during the training while promoting continuous professional development.

The successful completion of the programme marks another milestone in the University of Eldoret's efforts to champion quality, inclusive, and skills-oriented education. Through strategic partnerships with TVET CDACC and support from TAGDev 2.0, the University continues to strengthen the capacity of educators and institutions to deliver responsive education and training that meets the evolving demands of society and the labour market.

The training reaffirmed the collective commitment of the University of Eldoret, TVET CDACC, and TAGDev 2.0 towards advancing competency-based learning, promoting lifelong learning opportunities, and enhancing employability through recognition of skills and competencies acquired across diverse learning pathways.
